What Age Is Best for Wisdom Teeth Removal? Insights from Bedford Oral Surgeons

Wisdom teeth removal is like a rite of passage, something that you typically get done before entering adulthood. The wisdom teeth are the third molars that develop, most often in the later teen years. Due to the large size of these molars and the ever-shrinking size of human jaws as a result of evolution, most people need to have their wisdom teeth removed.

Is there an ideal age to have your wisdom teeth taken out? There may be, but it is not necessarily the same for everyone. Most people have them extracted in their late teens or early 20s. But the right time for you depends on a variety of factors that apply to you as an individual. Here’s what Bedford oral surgeon Daniel Braasch, DMD wants you to know about wisdom teeth removal

Why Timing Matters for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth begin to form under the gums between the ages of 7-10, but they don’t make an appearance until later. If your wisdom teeth come in at all, they will typically show up between the ages of 17-25. In many cases the wisdom teeth never erupt through the gums because they are stuck in the jaw or under the other teeth. Wisdom teeth that don’t come through the gums are considered to be impacted, which can lead to a variety of problems.

Impacted wisdom teeth or lack of adequate space in the jaw for the wisdom teeth can damage neighboring teeth and lead to crowding and misalignment. They may also become infected or develop cysts under the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can even damage the jaw bone.

The sooner problematic wisdom teeth are removed the better, and early assessment is key to detecting potential issues. Regular dental checkups and X-rays can monitor the development of wisdom teeth and help to determine the best time for removal.

The Best Age Range for Removal

The recommended age window for having your wisdom teeth removed is from 15-25. There are definite advantages to getting it done earlier rather than later, such as:

  • Removal is easier. When wisdom teeth are in the early stages of development, the roots are not yet fully grown. This makes them easier to remove because they are not as firmly set in the jaw.
  • Prevent damage to neighboring teeth. Getting wisdom teeth taken out earlier prevents them from pushing against the neighboring teeth and causing damage.
  • Faster recovery. Due to the easier extraction process as well as your age, recovery is faster when you get them out early.

Signs It May Be Time to Consider Removal

  • You experience physical symptoms such as swelling, discomfort, or tenderness.
  • Your wisdom teeth are impacted or partially erupted.
  • Your wisdom teeth came in crooked or at the wrong angle.
  • You have signs of infection or cyst formation.
  • Your other teeth are beginning to shift or crowd together.

Contact your dentist or oral surgeon if you notice any of these signs so that the wisdom teeth can be evaluated.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wisdom Teeth Removal

Is wisdom teeth removal always necessary?

In some cases the wisdom teeth have plenty of room and come in properly. In these cases removal may not be necessary. However, it is important to have a professional evaluation and regular monitoring in case problems arise.

Does removal hurt more for older adults?

It is not necessarily more painful to have your wisdom teeth taken out later in adulthood. Anesthesia will still be used to help you feel comfortable during the procedure. However, you may have a slightly longer or more difficult recovery period.

At Braasch OMS we believe that each individual deserves personalized care based on their own unique oral health needs.
